You better be…20% of all internet traffic is porn. Like it or hate it, porn site owners are rock stars at driving traffic.
(I know, I know…I hate the term “rock star” too, along with “guru” and “ninja”. Now “Sensai” does have a good ring to it…LOL…but all of them get the point across, right?)
Anyway…you are probably thinking, “So many people watch porn that a porn site owner doesn’t have to have a good site. He doesn’t have to pay attention to site design or SEO. He has such a large built in audience just with the niche that he can throw up any old site and get traffic.”
That’s what you are thinking…right? Well, you are right, but only half right. He does have a huge potential audience, but…
…he also has a huge amount of competition, and because of that a “XXX“ site owner has to be on top of his game on ANYTHING related to site traffic…and you can learn his secrets IF you dig in just a bit, so here is what you do…
- First, do a Google search for various “types” of porn sites (I’m NOT going to list “types”…you’ll have to make your own choices…<g>).
- Next, make a list of the top 5 sites the searches return for each “type” (excluding the sites at the top because of ads, of course).
- Before you do any technical looking, act like a regular site visitor…***NOTE: do this on the landing page ONLY! I recommend against clicking to ANYWHERE on a porn site unless you have some military-grade anti-virus software***…and look at the site setup like a visitor. Does it look engaging? Does it “grab” you? Is the appearance one that would make you want to see more of the site…or does it just say “blah” and make you want to click away and go to another site?
- Pay attention to the “look”…layout, colors, fonts (number of them and style), apparent ease of navigation…and remember…”look”, not content…LOL!
- Next, use a couple of tools like FireBug and YSlow to REALLY look at the site’s backend. Load times (and what is happening to make a slow site slow), CSS, Javascript, HTML…all of these elements can be inspected. A good look at Firebug and why a site owner should be using it can be found HERE.
The bottom line is, whether you find porn sites distasteful or are a regular visitor, they can teach you a LOT about how to set up your website or blog.
